Tyranny of the Type Manager

At Personal Archiving 2010, Bill Janssen (PARC) just mentioned something called the "tyranny of the type manager." This is the ubiquity of programs designed to create, manage and use only very specific types of files. For example, Light Room is optimized for its own formats which are used widely by enthusiasts to manage their digital photos.



where "type manager" comes from

This phrase, "type manager", came to me via a post by Ben Meyer in Nov 2005, at I know all this because the post is in my UpLib repository :-).
