Digital Technologies Development Librarians (2) positions available

The Virginia Tech Libraries invites nominations and applications for two energetic, flexible, and

innovative professionals to advance its strategic agenda with digital library initiatives. Virginia Tech is

architecture and urban studies, business, liberal arts and human sciences, natural resources and the

Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, the MetaArchive Cooperative, and the

Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition.

Summary:

Working both independently and in teams, provide technical leadership and programming expertise to

advance digital library infrastructures, collections, and services through application development and

applied research. Identify and develop new and existing technologies for these purposes. Play a key,

strategic role in advancing the libraries’ digital information infrastructure; and impact Virginia Tech’s

scholarly communication methods, digital library services, and the management and preservation of

Tech’s digital intellectual output. Contribute to developing new digital library services and work with

partners to share solutions to mutual challenges. Collaborate closely with personnel from several

library departments to achieve the goals of the positions and the libraries. Select and/or develop tools

that support the ongoing assessment of digital library initiatives and services. Participate in library

planning and serve on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Be active professionally and

contribute to developments in the field. Report to the Director, Digital Library & Archives and will

assist the DLA Director in shaping overall technology development strategy and direction. The

librarians may be involved with applications such as, but not limited to, Drupal, DSpace, ETD-db,

Fedora, ImageBase (a VT Libraries’ developed application), LOCKSS, and other associated

applications, tools, and specifications.

Qualifications:

An ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent advanced degree in a related field. Demonstrated experience

of programming experience in a Unix environment; demonstrated application development

experience with one or more open source programming languages such as Java (required), PHP,

Python, and/or Ruby; and SQL and database development skills. Experience with XML, relevant

metadata standards and knowledge of user-centered design processes. Excellent written and verbal

communication skills as well as problem solving and analytical skills. Must possess the ability to work

creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently. An ongoing

interest and ability to engage in professional development and contribution, and a capacity to thrive in

a changing work environment. Experience working in a research library. Other degree work in

computer or information science. Strong knowledge of current issues, and practices within the

scholarly communication and digital library areas. Well developed team-based work skills.

Demonstrated ability to plan, document, and complete projects.

Salary: commensurate with credentials and experience.

Faculty Rank: Assistant Professor. Administrative and Professional Faculty appointment.
